Why PDI training goes wrong

Mock tests aren’t a course.

Most PDIs who struggle aren’t short of effort. Their training has no shape: a few mocks, advice that contradicts the last trainer’s, and a lot of hoping. We hear it on every Zoom. So we wrote the course we wish every PDI had.

Mock test after mock test

The only support they’ve had is mock Part 3 style tests. Diana

The workbook: Mock-testing a PDI and listing the faults at the end works no better than doing it to a learner. The workbook builds the skills first, section by section. The three mock Part 3 records come at the end, when they mean something.

Advice that cancels itself out

A trainer says you over-instructed, so you under-instruct. The next trainer says under-instruction. Phil

The workbook: Everyone works to one standard. Every section names the Part 3 competencies and National Standard elements it builds, in the examiner’s own wording.

Nothing happens between sessions

If you try and do it ad hoc, life gets in the way. Diana

The workbook: PDI and trainer sign a learning agreement on day one: a weekly study slot, a session review within 24 hours, and sitting in at least once a month.

Reactive, until the third attempt

Instructors end up on their third and final attempt, usually from not being proactive. Diana

The workbook: Sections are signed off only on evidence, and the competency tracker shows the gaps months before test day. Three attempts and two years from Part 1: protect them.

Passed, but not finished

People pass and then don’t look at training again for years. Phil

The workbook: Unit 6 covers the first months as an ADI, CPD and the standards check. The year of Inspire carries on after the Part 3, into the first real pupils.

What’s in the package

The structure on paper. The teaching on video.

The workbook tells your PDI what to do next and how to prove they’ve done it. The membership shows them how it looks on a real lesson.

Look inside

131 pages. Nothing to fill in for the sake of it.

Every task asks for something your PDI will use on a real lesson or show their trainer as evidence.

Workbook page 3: how the course works, with the four steps and five kinds of evidence task

How the course works

Learn it, try it, prove it, reflect on it. Every section follows the same shape.

Workbook page 14: section 1.2, becoming an expert driver, with key ideas and video QR codes

Every section

Competencies, National Standard elements, key ideas, and QR codes into the videos.

Workbook page 36: the Prove it evidence table and the trainer sign-off box for section 2.3

Prove it, then sign off

The trainer signs a section off only when the evidence has been seen.

Unit by unit

Six units, in the order PDIs need them.

Read in order, worked through as training allows. Some tasks happen at home from day one, some in role play with the trainer, and the rest with real pupils.

1Sections 1.1–1.3

Foundations

Pass Parts 1 and 2 as a future teacher, not just a candidate. Plus the law, conduct and safeguarding every instructor needs before taking a pupil out.

2Sections 2.1–2.3

How people learn

The standard, client-centred learning, the experiential cycle, the GDE matrix, and why we teach skills rather than topics.

3Sections 3.1–3.4

In the car: core skills and risk

Talk-throughs, directions, watching the pupil, spotting faults, levels of instruction and the dual controls. Role play first, then real lessons.

4Sections 4.1–4.3

Lesson planning

Goals and needs, structure, practice areas and adapting the plan. The first four competencies, and the base every good lesson stands on.

5Sections 5.1–5.5

Teaching and learning strategies

The coaching toolkit: questions and listening, teaching style, examples, technical accuracy, feedback, fault fixing, reflection and inclusive practice.

6Sections 6.1–6.4

Bringing it together

Whole lessons, creating safer drivers for life, Part 3 readiness with mock tests, and the first steps as a qualified ADI.

Plus the working pages

The records that turn “I think I’m ready” into evidence a trainer can sign.

R8 · Recording log
One recorded lesson can evidence four or five tasks

The question behind every page

“Is what I’m doing right now helping this learner learn best?”

All 17 competencies come back to that one question. The workbook teaches PDIs to ask it on every lesson, long before an examiner is sitting in the back.

Who it’s for

Bought by the trainer. Used by the PDI.

Franchise owners and driving schools

One standard, whichever trainer they get.

When PDI training depends on which trainer a PDI happens to get, so does your school’s name. The workbook gives every trainer and every PDI in your school the same course to work to.

  • The same course, whoever trains

Every trainer works from the same 22 numbered sections. A PDI who changes trainer picks up at the same task, and hears the same advice.

  • See where every PDI is

Each section has started and signed-off dates, and the competency tracker shows the gaps. You know who is on track without chasing anyone.

  • Car time goes on teaching

Reading, videos and knowledge tasks happen at home. Paid training sessions are spent on what can only happen in the car.

  • New trainers have a structure on day one

A trainer new to PDI training gets a course mapped to the National Standard, not a blank page and a few mock tests.

  • A stronger offer when you recruit

Build the £350 into your course fee: “our training includes a printed course and a year of Inspire.” Phil did exactly this with his own school’s PDI course.

  • Instructors who keep getting better

The membership carries on past the Part 3, into the first pupils and the first standards check. Instructors who keep learning are the ones who stay and grow into your mentors.

Independent trainers

A full course behind you, without writing one.

You stay the trainer. The workbook doesn’t replace your in-car training. It gives it a spine, and gives your PDIs real work to do between sessions.

  • No course to write

131 pages built on the National Standard and the 17 competencies, every task numbered. “Do 3.1.4 before Thursday” is all the homework you need to set.

  • PDIs who do the work

The learning agreement they sign commits them to a weekly study slot, a written review after every session, and sitting in every month.

  • Evidence, not opinion

You sign a section off only when you’ve seen the evidence: a recording, a sit-in write-up, a real lesson. When a PDI asks “am I ready?”, the workbook answers.

  • Backed up, not contradicted

Your PDIs watch real lessons reviewed against the same competencies you’re teaching. They hear the same message from a second voice.

  • Not training alone

It can be an isolating job, for you and for them. Fortnightly live Zooms and the members’ group give your PDIs somewhere to take questions between your sessions.

  • Look as organised as anyone

A printed course and a year of an award-winning training platform from the first session. Charge it on, or build it into your price.

PDIs

Know what to do next, and know when you’re ready.

You get three attempts at the Part 3, and two years from passing Part 1. Don’t spend them guessing.

  • A route from Part 1 to your first pupils

Six units in a sensible order, so you always know what’s next, even when your trainer is busy.

  • One thing at a time

“Trying to work out all 17 competencies in one go would fry my brain.” Each section builds two or three. By Unit 6 it’s the whole lesson.

  • Watch it done properly

Scan the QR code and the right video opens: real lessons, real reviews, and Phil and Diana explaining the why.

  • Proof that you’re ready

Every section ends with the evidence you need. Three mock Part 3s on the real marking form show your scores moving, rather than hoping they have.

  • Written for people, not examiners

Plain English, real examples, and room for honest, scrappy notes. Reflection isn’t about perfection. It’s about one small tweak at a time.

  • Beyond the test

A year of Inspire covers your first months with real pupils, and the workbook becomes the start of your CPD log for your first standards check.

PDI Training Package FAQ

How it fits your training, and what happens next.

No. The units follow the order most trainers already work in, and sections overlap, so you choose which tasks fit the week. Some tasks happen at home from day one, some in role play with you, and the “Do it” tasks only once your PDI is teaching real pupils. The workbook gives your training a structure and a paper trail; what happens in the car is still yours.

Give your PDIs a course, not just a mock test.
